Pararaucaria patagonica cones and an aerial lignotuber glued onto a stem. The best scientific evidence at this time indicates that these "mushroom-shaped" structures are aerial lignotubers, which were vegetative reproductive structures that arose in the axils of leaves in response to injury, such as fire (Dernbach, 2002).
